I went to the Harvest Festival at our tiny local church this afternoon. I am not a ‘Christian’ and haven’t been to one since I was a child, but I really enjoyed it. Being such a small and mostly regular congregation, everyone knows everyone else, the vicar is a cheerful character, his wife makes marvellous plum loaf which was handed round after the service with mugs of tea, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming without being at all evangelical or inquisitorial. We returned with bags of apples, home-made pear jam and the obligatory small marrow.
